Previously, if you requested a Hopkins yard sign then you received email updates from Libby via her personal email address, but copy-pasting over 400 email addresses into the BCC field was becoming cumbersome, so we're going to be using this service moving forward. If you showed up for Hopkins bike lanes on March 12: THANK YOU! If you couldn’t make it, here’s a recap: On Thursday afternoon, March 12, more than 200 students, families, and community members of all ages assembled on Hopkins Street in North Berkeley to demand the City of Berkeley follow through on its already-approved plans to upgrade Hopkins with new protected bike lanes and improvements for pedestrians and transit riders. The demonstrators cheered, danced, blew bubbles, and held up signs to express strong community support. The atmosphere was festive, but the message was serious: protected bike lanes on Hopkins are essential for equitable street safety. They will ensure safe passage to school for children, improve the shopping experience for local businesses, and reduce vehicle speeds — making the street safer for everyone. The community is aghast that Berkeley City Council members O’Keefe and Kesarwani are proposing to repave Hopkins without the planned bike lanes. The proposal ignores hundreds of thousands of dollars and over a year spent on planning, meetings with local residents and business, and public engagement. We will not allow this vital work and investment to be dismissed. We will continue pushing to ensure the community gets the bike safety improvements that we deserve on Hopkins and across Berkeley. Stay tuned for updates on our next actions - meetings, bike demonstrations and parties, and more! I gather my neighbors to support more housing and better transportation options in my city
First of all: THANK YOU! This result wouldn't have been possible without hundreds of residents taking action for a safer Hopkins Street. Every email, postcard, yard sign, and comment had a huge impact. Most importantly: Berkeley city council voted to approve protected bike lanes on Hopkins last night! The meeting nearly went until 1am with 3 hours of public comment, quite a few from some of the people reading this email right now. If you went to the meeting or participated on zoom, you know...
Thanks to everyone who has sent in emails, put up a sign, forwarded emails to their friends, helped organize an action, donated to pay for signs, talked to their neighbors and generally showed up for street safety on Hopkins. We are in the home stretch! Hopkins is scheduled for a vote next Tuesday. View the agenda here and read the item here. Hopkins will get a vote at the meeting on July 28 at 6pm Send a quick email to your councilmember today (not sure who your councilmember is? Find out...
TL;DR: Hopkins repaving is coming to Berkeley city council on July 28. But first, a quick update from April 15 Our Hopkins page was updated but here’s a summary: FITES members rejected the “pave Hopkins with pedestrian safety features only” proposal unless it was altered to include protected bike lanes on Hopkins from at least Sutter to Gilman with direction to explore extending the bike lanes further west. Basically, the authors of the original item were told that they needed to add bike...
